About Sujangarh

The spiritual and wildlife gateway of Shekhawati

History & Founding

Sujangarh was founded by Thakur Sujan Singh of the Bikaner royal family in the early 19th century. Named after its founder, the town grew as a trading post on the edge of the Thar Desert, benefiting from its position along key caravan routes connecting Bikaner, Jaipur, and Shekhawati.

The town's name literally means "Fort of Sujan" — though the original fortifications have largely been absorbed by modern development, the legacy of Marwari trading families is evident in the town's architecture and civic buildings.

Sujangarh gained renewed importance in 1994 with the construction of the Tirupati Balaji Venkateswara Temple, the first South Indian-style temple built in Rajasthan, marking a unique cultural and religious milestone.

Rajasthani (Marwari dialect) is the primary language, while Hindi and English are widely understood. The local cuisine features classic Marwari dishes such as dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and ker sangri.

Festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm — Diwali, Holi, Gangaur, and Teej bring the town to life. The Tirupati Balaji Temple also celebrates Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Brahmotsavams following Tirumala traditions.
