Overview
Tal Chhapar Blackbuck Sanctuary is a protected area located approximately 25 km from Sujangarh, famous for its thriving population of the Indian blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra). Spread over 7.19 km² of rolling grasslands and scrub, this sanctuary is one of the best places in Rajasthan to observe blackbucks in their natural habitat.
The sanctuary is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 bird species recorded, including migratory raptors like the Montagu's harrier, marsh harrier, and steppe eagle. The dry grasslands attract desert wheatears, larks, and sandgrouse.
Established as a sanctuary in 1966, Tal Chhapar plays a crucial role in blackbuck conservation. The antelopes here are relatively habituated to vehicles, making for excellent wildlife photography opportunities.
Wildlife at a Glance
🦌 Blackbuck
The star attraction. Males have striking black-and-white coats and long spiral horns. Herds of 20–50 can be seen grazing peacefully.
🦊 Desert Fox
Look for the Indian desert fox (Vulpes vulpes pusilla) at dawn and dusk — shy but frequently sighted near burrows.
🦅 Raptors
Winter brings harriers, falcons, eagles, and kestrels. Tal Chhapar is known as one of Rajasthan's best raptor-watching sites.
🐦 Resident Birds
Grey francolin, Indian courser, cream-coloured courser, desert wheatear, and various larks and babblers.
